Beckford
Tower
William Beckford (1760 - 1844), the richest man of England
at its time, commanded to construct a tower where to
continue cultivating his taste for architecture, art
collections and the scenic gardening. Of a noticeable
Italian style, the tower is crowned by a Greek design
lighthouse. The interiors are an attempt to construct
an unique and private world of exquisite Eastern carpets,
ceilings of oak inlaid with purple, scarlet and gold,
curtains of Damascus and objects designed by himself
as the Eastern porcelain with elaborated and precious
metal moldings.
At the present time, the visitors can wander through
the beautiful spiral stairs that takes to the terrace
from where they will be able to admire the landscape
that surrounds the city, or to visit the architectonic,
paintings, models, objects of art and furniture collections
that illustrate the life and times of William Beckford.
